Flax seed oil and dry-eye prevention goes hand in hand, since several studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can affect the meibomian gland secretions in patients with dry eyes as well as decrease the risk of inflammations. A recent study has also found that flaxseed oil may be as effective as a commonly used dry eye medication (doxycycline) for the treatment of dry eye.


The main factor behind flax seed oil and dry eyes prevention is that flax seed oil contains ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), which will be converted into EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in the human body.

Vitamin C is most abundant water-soluble antioxidant in tear fluid. It acts to neutralize free radicals and helps recharge the antioxidant vitamin E. It also enhances the production of IgE concentrates in tears, the first line of basophil and mast cell defense against invading pathogens and allergens that frequently cause dry eye symptoms.

B6 is a water soluble vitamin and is a member of the Vitamin B complex. Vitamin B6, also called pyridoxine, is essential in the breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. All of the B vitamins are important in treating dry eyes, but vitamin B6 aids in the proper absorption of magnesium. Magnesium helps the body produce a hormone called prostaglandin E-7, which is necessary for tear production.

Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin is a protective protein which is widely accepted as an indicator of ocular surface health. Lactoferrin levels in patients with tear deficient dry eye, as in Sjörgrens have been shown to be about half of normal levels. Studies have shown that raising lactoferrin levels via punctal occlusion or lactoferrin drops can reverse damage produced by ocular surface disease.
